Resonant Signs

The Resonate Signs project illuminates a re-enchantment of the natural world. It highlights the use of natural materials, mycelium as a medium, and climate awareness. These works are inspired by scientist like Merlin Sheldrake and Paul Stamets and informed by illuminators of the high middle ages like Hildegard of Bingen, the original medieval mystic and polymath of the middle ages, whose visions allowed her to express what she describes as viriditas: the greening power of the divine in nature. These works encapsulate the divine force of nature. This depth of a self-reflection is only found in the natural world. The spiritual aspect of the body of work is as important as its use of materials. The greenness was an expression of heaven, the creative power of life that can be witnessed in gardens, forests, and farmland all around us. She saw viriditas as something to be cultivated in both our bodies and our souls.

Resonant Signs signals the presence of secret spaces and sacred places in nature. I share what I understand about divinity in nature. Through a sustainable practice I develop bodies of works that allow me to be closer to nature.

I forage and process materials into earth friendly dyes. I use fruits, flowers, seeds, roots, chalk, clay, and mycelium as a medium. In this series of 12 paintings, each are finished with a cherry wood frame of Gothic style paying homage to the high middle ages and arches found in the architecture of the time. At the peak of each painting is fused glass documenting the phases of the sun and the phases of the moon. A topic still hand documented by illuminators of the time.  Each piece represents an animal from the High Middle Ages and some pieces will include mycelium, ethically foraged natural palettes processed into dyes to serve as natural watercolor.

The finished body of work will be 12 framed pieces painted using the historical methods of illuminators who once illustrated manuscripts and delicate and sacred books during the High Middle Ages 111th - 14th century.  The social media aspect of the project is to share portals of views of the natural world. These photographs are meant to inspire continued stewardship of the natural world. Please join my mailing list to learn more about exhibitions and workshops.
